Wells Shot and Discus Gold Medalist

The Cavegirls, with a score of 47 points, placed fifth at the George Love Relays in Portales on Friday, April 11. The Cavemen, who tallied 38 points, placed sixth.

It was a big day for the Cavegirls’ Atria Wells. Wells picked up gold medals in both the shot put and discus competition.

The Cavegirl junior tossed the shot put 38'2.5" and then threw the discus 115'06".

"Atria is a competitor. She loves to compete," said CHS head track coach Charles Millar. "In the discus, she battled a girl from Roswell and, on her fifth throw, grabbed first place. Her throw, a 10' personal best, also qualified her for state."

In CHS' first meet of the year in Roswell, Wells qualified for state in the shot put. In 2024, she was the Class 5A state shot put champion.

The Cavemen were paced by junior sprinter Bobby Castaneda. Castaneda placed third in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

The Cavemen and Cavegirl track teams competed in the Clovis Wildcat Relays on Thursday, April 17. Results of the meet will be posted in the Friday, April 25, edition of the Carlsbad Local.
