Unique Fitness Studio Opens in Town

By Misty Cryer

For those cruising down Canal Street, a new business across from Albertson’s next to Papa John’s may have sparked interest and curiosity. HOTWORX is a modern fitness studio featuring high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and isometric workout sessions virtually instructed in infrared saunas complemented with a weight training setup.

JP and Becky Hutson, originally from Artesia, brought HOTWORX to Carlsbad as franchisees. “This is our first one,” said Becky. “We did buy four more licenses, so we have five total licenses, with Carlsbad being our first open studio. In January, we will start to work on the location for our next one,” she said.

In explaining the services HOTWORX offers, Becky said, “We have nine different saunas—there is isometrics, and then there are also HIIT classes.”

The isometrics include Hot Yoga, Hot Warrior, Hot Pilates, Hot Bands, Hot Stretch, Hot Buns, and Hot Core. “They are all focused on different areas; all of them hold the poses, so you are in a sauna, and it is hot, but you are holding these different, like squats, for 20 to 30 seconds at a time,” said Becky.

“Then you have the HIIT classes, which are your cycling,” Becky said. She explained that these include Hot Cycle and Hot Blast—different bike types—and Hot Thunder, which features a rowing machine.

The HIIT classes are 15 minutes each, with the isometrics being 30 minutes each. “You are in the sauna actually for 45 minutes, but you are doing the workout for 30 minutes because you are doing the warmup—you are stretching, and you are cooling down,” said Becky.

“Infrared is the way the heat penetrates through your body, and it also makes it easier to recover, to breathe easier in the sauna; it’s an overall healing process. It has so many good benefits when it comes to how your body recovers and heals with the infrared on top of the sauna,” said Becky. Other benefits she mentioned include reducing blood pressure, increasing heart rate, rejuvenation, fat breakdown, and detoxing.

“In the back, we have free weights, a cable machine, and a bench,” Becky said, explaining that this provides options for members to do their own workout and weight training in addition to the option of following directed exercises provided virtually through the use of a screen.

“We have a pretty large retail area where we offer different supplements, clothing, all the equipment that you would need for your workout; there’s a lot of fun things in there,” she said.

“We have two restrooms; one has a shower. The doors are locked 24/7, even when we are staffed. The doors are always locked, so it is safe and secure. We have a great security system,” said Becky.

The facility is staffed Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Becky said members can access workouts on an app, or they can use a code to access the facility at times that it is not staffed. She explained that the app is used to book classes and to participate in the 90-day challenge that is always running. The app also tracks workouts, calories, and progress.

“With the 90-day challenge, you can earn $75 in merch perks,” said Becky. She said these perks can be used toward memberships or in the retail area.

“I started working out at one before I became a franchisee. I just loved the small, intimate, kind of boutique-style fit,” Becky said. “It feels like a family; we’re all there taking care of each other and looking out for one another.”

HOTWORX is located at 905 N. Canal St., Suite B &C. For information about the studio, memberships, and options for working out, call 575-288-2191 or visit the website: https://www.hotworx.net/studio/carlsbad-nm.
