Artesia General Hospital’s “Catch It Early” campaign has made a powerful impact, reaching hundreds in the community and leading to a substantial increase in mammogram appointments, with over 460 participants. Running from mid-September through mid-November, the campaign used newspaper ads, social media, radio, and texts to spread a critical message: early detection can save lives.
“We wanted every woman in our community to understand the importance of regular screenings,” said Roy Thomas, Director of Diagnostic Imaging at AGH. “Breast cancer is highly treatable when detected early, and it was inspiring to see the community rally around this cause, from our educational talks to the foundation’s golf tournament.”
Local businesses joined in to show support, with Artesia’s Kith and Kin and Carlsbad’s The Blue House offering discounted beverages to raise awareness.
The campaign also touched AGH staff, some of whom became patients themselves. Radiology scheduler Jennifer Simpson shared, “I hadn’t had a mammogram in over 10 years. The technologists here helped ease my anxiety, and I’m so grateful to be part of a team helping others overcome their fears. The whole process was smooth, and I was glad to be on both sides—to help patients realize AGH is here to support them.”
Another radiology scheduler, Amanda Dudley, who has a personal connection to cancer, shared her reflections, “My mother passed from cancer, and I know firsthand the importance of early detection. This experience has been incredibly meaningful, and I’m thankful to be part of something so impactful.”
Throughout the campaign, hundreds attended AGH events featuring medical experts who emphasized the importance of early detection. Liz Aranda, a committee member with Women for a Better Artesia, explained her motivation to schedule a mammogram. “As a 47-year-old with young children, I know that health is wealth, and early detection is key. Having access to a mammogram covered by my insurance was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up—it could truly save my life. I encourage other women not to hesitate—this quick, easy screening could be lifesaving. AGH is doing fantastic work.”
In October alone, over 300 mammogram screenings were completed, reflecting the campaign’s success. Lead Mammography Technologist Halie Estrada expressed her gratitude, saying, “Thank you for another successful campaign! This wouldn’t be possible without the community’s support. I feel lucky to be able to educate the community on mammography’s importance.”
As Artesia General Hospital looks forward to next year’s campaign, it remains committed to raising awareness about breast cancer. To help streamline future screenings, the hospital encourages patients to ensure previous mammogram records are on file.
While the “Catch It Early” campaign saw incredible success, breast cancer screenings are available year-round. Regular mammograms are essential for early detection, and AGH encourages all eligible women to schedule their screenings at any time throughout the year. By prioritizing preventive care, AGH is committed to supporting the health and well-being of the community every day.
