Carlsbad High’s Cavegirl basketball team, following back-to-back losses to Hobbs and Clovis, will try to get back on track against the Roswell Coyotes in the Cavern City on Friday night, February 14.
The Class 5A 12th-ranked Cavegirls will take the floor at 16-8 overall. In District 4/5A play, they’re 1-3. Roswell, ranked 14th, is 13-11 on the year and 0-4 in conference. Earlier this season, the Cavegirls ran by the Coyotes, 43-32, in Roswell.
With seeds going out for this year’s state tournament—just a stone’s throw away—the two remaining games on the Cavegirls’ schedule have become increasingly more important.
Friday night’s clash with the Coyotes looks to be a pivotal game for them when it comes to advancing to state.
“If we can beat Roswell, we’ll finish no worse than third in conference,” said Caveman head coach Matt Enloe. “With Hobbs ranked No. 1 and Clovis ranked No. 5 ahead of us in the District 4/5A standings, we’d be in pretty good shape for moving on to post-season play. So, in reality, our game with Roswell is going to be the most important game we have left on our schedule.”
The JVs will take the floor at 5:30 p.m. to open up the night’s action, with varsity play set to tip off at 7 p.m.
Clovis 50, Carlsbad 34
The Cavegirls, down 21-9 to the Clovis Wildcats after first-quarter play, battled back to close their 12-point opening frame deficit to just eight at the half, 25-17. But Carlsbad couldn’t keep pace with the Cats during the final two quarters of play. Outscored 25-17 in the second half, they fell to the fifth-ranked Wildcats 50-34.
The game took place in Clovis on Tuesday, February 11.
“We just couldn’t get going against Clovis,” said Enloe. “After playing so hard against Hobbs on Friday, February 7, our kids were both physically and mentally exhausted.”
Abbey Dugan, with 12 points, and Jasmynn Gonzales, with seven, led CHS offensively.
Cavegirls 34, Hobbs 44
For three quarters, the Carlsbad Cavegirls played even basketball with the state’s top-ranked Hobbs Eagles. CHS, up 15-12 at the half and 28-22 after three quarters, appeared to be on their way to handing the 21-1 Eagles their second loss of the season.
But an Eagle uprising in the fourth period turned back the Cavegirls’ bid for the upset. Hobbs out-pointed CHS 22-6 in the final frame of play to grab their 22nd win of the season, 44-34, and preserve their No. 1 ranking.
CHS, led by Abbey Dugan and Becca Brown, who each scored 10, hit eight of nine free throws in the loss, an average of 88.8%.
