Down 10-4 after first quarter play, the Carlsbad Cavegirls rallied to outscore the Alamogordo Tigers 40-20 over the final three periods to topple the Cats 44-30. The victory pushed Carlsbad’s overall record up to 2-1.
Abbey Dugan found her way to the bucket for 14 points to lead CHS to the victory. She also pulled down 13 rebounds and grabbed 6 steals.
Jasmynn Gonzales was especially big on the boards. The 5’11” senior grabbed 19 rebounds, along with 10 points, en route to the Cavegirl win.
Although the victory made it back-to-back wins for CHS, Cavegirl head coach Matt Enloe still had some concerns.
“Our kids are playing some good basketball right now, and with a little luck we could easily be 3-0,” said Enloe. “But, at this point of the season, we’re just not hitting enough of our shots from beyond the arc.”
“While we shot better than 40 percent (15 of 36) inside the arc, in our win over Alamogordo, we hit only 11% (3 of 27) of our threes,” he said. “It’s a trend that’s been following us all season.”
“We’re capable of doing much better outside the arc,” said the Cavegirl boss. “I have a lot of confidence in our kids though. They work really hard every day, so sooner or later our three’s will start falling in for us.”
Overall, seven Cavegirls contributed points in the CHS win over Alamogordo. Also scoring, along with Dugan and Gonzales, were Hayden Brose 6, Cameron Zumbrun 5, Rebecca Brown 5, Maci Garcia 3 and Kendra Ortega 1.
City of Champions
As with the Cavemen, the Cavegirls are currently competing in the Artesia City of Champions Basketball Tournament. Tournament play opened on Thursday, December 5, and will run through Saturday, Dec. 7.
On Thursday, the Cavegirls were scheduled to collide with 7-3 El Paso Bel Air. A win over Bel Air would match them up against the winner of the Roswell vs El Paso opener on Friday, Dec. 6, at 2:30 p.m. A loss would send them to the loser’s bracket to take on the loser of that game at 8:30 a.m.
“If we play up to our potential and can drop in a few three’s along the way, I think we’ll have a good shot at winning this year’s tournament,” said Enloe. “I know our girls will be hustling and working hard on the floor for all three of our games. They’ve been putting out their best effort all season long.”
“However, how we finish the City of Champions tournament should give us a pretty good indication as to just where we stand among other New Mexico basketball teams at this time of the season,” he said.
Other teams competing in this year’s City of Champions Invitational are Alamogordo, Deming, Goddard and host Artesia.
