Carlsbad Heights Lions invite local families to celebrate Spaghetti Fest—all you can eat—on Saturday, April 12, at Carlsbad High School cafeteria, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Heights Lions Spaghetti Dinner (really, a sumptuous lunch) comes this year on our last Saturday before Tax Day. “A great time to evade stress in a cheap, hearty meal with jovial, generous Heights Lions,” said Jay Francis, who’ll be working the serving line.
Bill Deringer lists his popular traditional menu: “Spaghetti with meat sauce, bacon-flavored green beans, garlic bread, salad, sweet tea, and sheet cake dessert.”
Conviviality also sparks this Heights Lions’ yearly fundraiser. Among past cooks, servers, greeters, and scullions have been college staff, judge, prosecutor, legislator, bank teller, business owner, oilfield pros, teachers, and food pantry volunteers.
Angel Martinez of Abundant Harvest was asked why his crew pitched in last year.
“Heights Lions donate to our weekly pantry, of course. As well, they support so many other volunteer efforts in Carlsbad.”
Carlsbad Community of Hope, Transitional Housing, Battered Family Shelter, CASA, Community Kitchen, Desert Willow Wildlife Refuge, Inspired by Science, Christmas Anonymous, Backpacks for Hunger, Boys and Girls Club, and SENMC scholarships are but some local efforts funded by Heights Lions.
“We also build wheelchair ramps for local folks who can’t afford them,” adds Vishal Kholwadwala, a new member of Carlsbad Heights Lions.
Spaghetti Fest organizer Rhonda Jones reminds everyone that Heights Lions also accept requests, screen applicants, and then fund optical exams and eyeglasses for local needy adults.
“Spaghetti Fest/Spaghetti Dinner raises funds, particularly for our Lions administrative budget: Chamber of Commerce dues, state, and national Lions dues, and buying lunches for local speakers at our Friday meetings at Stevens Inn,” she said.
“But it’s just good fun for hungry folks on pre-Tax Saturday, too.”
Tickets are $7 or three for $20, and can be purchased from any Heights Lion now selling them around Carlsbad.
