Guadalupe Mountain Farm, Ranch, and Show Supplies is hosting an event filled with enjoyable activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. October 26 at 2838 Pecos Hwy. With vendors, contests, games, activities, and a “pie in the face” food drive, Harvest Hoedown is sure to be a good time.
“We have teamed up with Yucca Blossom Trade Days,” said Amber Hughes, co-owner of Guadalupe Mountain Farm, Ranch, and Show Supplies. “We’re going to have about 15 different vendors,” she said, explaining that registration was still in process.
“Kim and Lynn Ballard will have their Small Town Grill, which has wonderful barbeque,” said Hughes. Other food vendors mentioned include a wood fire pizza place, old-fashioned soda, and a jerky vendor.
Hughes said there will be vendors of all kinds. “Kali Kruegel will be doing the trendy deal, decorating caps and bags. We will have some clothing booths. We will also have a lady out of Artesia who makes soaps, candles, lotion; they smell so amazing. It’s called DSB Soap Company, and it is goat milk products,” she said. She also mentioned a booth where you can build a stuffed animal and a vendor that makes wreaths.
Activities at the event will include bouncy houses, games, and contests.
Hughes said the animal costume contest can be pets or livestock. “I’ve had people ask me if they can bring like a dairy heifer dressed up or a cow. We have lots of people that do the chickens; they dress up their chickens. We’re going to have costume contests for kids and adults too, not just animals,” she said.
“We are having a baking contest. They have to have their baked goods in by noon and we will judge them by 3 p.m. We’ll have some prizes for first, second, and third for that,” said Hughes.
“The goat roping contest should be a lot of fun, too. We did that last time we had one of these, and then they had one at the county fair. There were a bunch of teams; people had the best time. I’m hoping that it turns out as well as it did at the county fair,” said Hughes. She said competitors pay to be in the contest, and the winner gets part of the pot.
“We’re going to have lots of games,” said Hughes. For example, she said Dizzy Tic-Tac-Toe is one of the games where participants have to do something before they put their x or o on the board.
Hughes said that attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods or non-perishable items for the can drive. “We’ll have buckets set up for the different employees with their names on it. Whoever gets the most canned goods donated to their bucket, they will get a pie in the face,” she said.
Hughes said the food will be donated to a charitable cause for Thanksgiving. “We will let the employee that wins the most votes and gets a pie in the face, we’ll let them decide which place they want to donate it to in town and take it to them. We can keep collecting beyond that day, but they will have a pie in the face that day,” she said.
Hughes said she and her husband Clint opened Guadalupe Mountain Farm, Ranch, and Show Supplies about five years ago.
“Our kids showed livestock through 4H, and there was no show feed or supplies available in Carlsbad. The closest was either Artesia or Hobbs,” said Hughes. “It was just a hard year for a lot of show families. We also have a fencing company—Guadalupe Mountain Fencing. It kind of tied with everything. Initially, we were only going to do the show stuff to not step on Wally Menuey, who owned Circle S. We had a good working relationship with him and wanted to keep that,” she said.
According to Hughes, when Menuey was told he had to shut his doors due to the sinkhole, he called the Hughes family and told them if they wanted to go “full fledge,” he would support that. At that time, they increased their offerings of feed and supplies.
Hughes said Guadalupe Mountain Farm, Ranch, and Show Supplies carries a variety of items, including plumbing fittings, supplies for the oilfield, fence building and gates, and feeders. “We have a wide variety of things,” she said.
“If I don’t carry something, I try to get it. Because obviously, there are so many different things out there, I’m not going to know everything that every single person wants. As requested, I really try to do what I can to supply for our local community or whoever wants to come shop with us. Just because I don’t have it doesn’t mean I can’t get it,” she said.
“I also carry stuff like purses, some jewelry, knives, cowhide rugs, duffle bags… We carry honey; we carry sunglasses; we carry—it’s called Wyld brand—ice chests that are made in America that have a lifetime warranty, some tumblers, and then the handled cups that are like the real popular Stanleys. We have some really cool ones that are metal, but they look like a solo cup. I think they are so fun. We have two different sizes of those; they are double-walled, and they have copper in the center to keep drinks cold or hot longer. We have a wide variety of things outside of feed and ranch supplies, too,” she said.
