On Wednesday, February 5, at CHS, Carlsbad High’s Diego Ramirez signed a letter of intent to play collegiate football for the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos during the 2025-26 school year.
NMMI, located in Roswell, is a junior college that competes in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference.
Ramirez, an All-District 3-4/6A selection this year, excelled for the Cavemen at an inside linebacker spot. At 6’0” and 190 lbs., he recorded 103 total tackles, 31 solos, and 72 assists. He also had five tackles for losses, a sack, a forced fumble, a safety, and an interception.
Signed and sealed, but yet to be delivered, Ramirez, who has yet made an official visit to NMMI, said he’s happy to be a Bronco and looking forward to playing at the next level.
One of the reasons Ramirez is so happy is that he’ll be taking the field for former Cavemen head coach Oliver Soukup, currently the head football coach for the Broncos.
“I played for Coach Soukup three years ago as a sophomore when he was here at CHS,” said Ramirez. “The fact that I already know him and that I liked how he ran his program when he was here in Carlsbad made me feel like NMMI was the perfect place for me to play collegiately.”
Just where he’ll be lining up when NMMI’s 2025 season kicks off has yet to be determined. However, Ramirez feels like the Broncos will utilize him as a linebacker.
And how has the Cavemen football program prepared him to compete at the next level?
“Coach Sanders and his staff, for the past two years, have taught me to be a much more disciplined player,” he said. “They’ve taught me the value of hard work and doing things the right way.
“So, I feel like it’s the discipline and work ethic I’ve learned as a Caveman that will help me to be able to compete at the junior college level,” said the soon-to-be Bronco. “As for being a Bronco next year, I can hardly wait.”
“Coach Soukup landed a good one,” said Cavemen head coach Cale Sanders. “No one will work harder for him than Diego.”
Ramirez, currently undecided on a major, is the son of Rigo Aguayo and Angel Ramirez.
