CHS will host the Carlsbad Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15. It will mark the first time this season that the Cavemen and Cavegirls have played at home.

There will be eight teams in the tournament. Competing, along with Carlsbad, will be Artesia, Las Cruces, Robertson, Clovis, Hobbs, Organ Mountain, and Goddard.

The tourney will use a flighted format. Singles players will be placed in six separate brackets, one through six. Doubles play will be competed in three separate brackets, one through three.

Singles play will take place on Friday at 9 a.m. The boys will compete at the high school, while the girls compete at the Pecos River courts. Doubles play will be played on Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. For doubles play, the boys will be at the Pecos River courts, while the girls compete at Carlsbad High.

“Although the weather may be an issue, we’re all excited about playing at home for the first time this season. However, we’re hoping, in order to be able to get through each day’s schedule of events, that the wind won’t get too bad,” said CHS assistant coach Diamond Morrill. “This tournament includes teams we have not seen this year. So, as in last week’s tournament in Hobbs, it will give us an opportunity to see how we fare among other New Mexico teams.”

Hobbs Invitational Results

Carlsbad High’s Cavemen and Cavegirl tennis teams competed at the Hobbs Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 7-8. Five teams competed at the meet. Alongside Carlsbad were Artesia, Greenwood, Lovington, and the host Hobbs Eagles.

“This tournament was conducted as a series of dual meets. A dual-meet format consists of a team’s top six singles players taking on the top six singles players of another team, their top three doubles teams against the other team’s top three, and lastly, a mixed doubles team from each squad,” said CHS assistant coach Diamond Morrill. “Both boys and girls compete against the same teams.

“As individual teams, the Cavemen finished 3-0 and the Cavegirls 2-1. However, in order to determine which team won a match, both the boys’ and girls’ scores were combined,” she said. “It rained in Hobbs, so we were unable to finish the last dual.”

The Hobbs Invitational proved to be a great barometer for both the Cavemen and Cavegirls.

“This was a really nice tournament for our kids to compete in. Besides giving them an opportunity to gain a lot more on-the-court experience, it also allowed them to watch some of our district rivals compete, which was valuable information for them to soak in,” she said. “It also gave them an opportunity to improve their dual meet records.”
