CHS Swim Team Report
The Carlsbad Swim Team brought home lots of hardware from the 2025 District 3-4 Swimming and Diving Championships held at the CORE in Hobbs on Saturday, February 8.
Competing in a field of 12, both the Cavemen, with 67 points, and the Cavegirls, with 39, placed fourth.
The CHS swim team’s effort turned a lot of heads at the meet, but none more so than Carlsbad head coach Sam Segura’s.
“Courtney Lindsey, my assistant coach, and I are so incredibly proud of the team,” said an excited Coach Segura. “Our swimmers showed up and swam their hearts out. We couldn’t have asked more from them.
“We are a team that pushes each other to be better every day. The multiple time drops and the positive energy and support amongst the teammates is what has made this group so incredible this year,” she said. “I’m excited to see what our state-qualifiers will do at the state swim meet at Albuquerque Academy on February 21 and 22, and also what the team can accomplish together moving forward into next year.”
At the District meet, CHS’s swimmers qualified for state in two more events. The Cavegirls dropped two seconds in the Girls’ 200 Yard Medley Relay to punch their ticket to Albuquerque with a time of 2:06.71, also earning them a bronze medal. The relay featured freshman Taitum Lindsey on the Backstroke-leg, freshman Tiny Martinez on the Breaststroke-leg, junior Olivia Jang on the Butterfly-leg, and sophomore Kimberly Quintana on the Freestyle-leg.
Also qualifying for state was junior Samuel Vega in the Boys’ 200 Yard IM, earning a bronze medal with a season-best time of 2:12.59. This is his second qualifying individual event, having qualified in the 100 Yard Backstroke earlier in the season at the Carlsbad Holiday Invitational.
In addition to new state-qualifiers, several Carlsbad swimmers returned home with medals. Senior Mason Dhenin collected Carlsbad’s only gold medal in the Boys’ 500 Yard Freestyle with a season-best time of 5:14.00. He also grabbed a bronze medal in the Boys’ 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:55.59.
Also picking up medals were Samuel Vega, who earned a silver medal in the Boys’ 100 Yard Backstroke with a time of 59.01; Junior Olivia Jang, who earned a bronze medal in the Girls’ 100 Yard Butterfly with a season-best time of 1:03.44; and the Girls’ 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, featuring Taitum Lindsey, Tiny Martinez, Kimberly Quintana, and Olivia Jang, who earned bronze medals with a season-best time of 1:56.31.
The team’s state-qualifiers will continue to train over the next two weeks in preparation for the 2025 NMAA Swimming and Diving Championships, which will take place on February 21-22 at Albuquerque Academy.
There will be a community state send-off for the CHS Swim Teams and CHS Wrestling Teams on Thursday, February 20, at the Carlsbad Mall. Local residents are all invited to come out and show their support for these hard-working athletes.
