CHS Swim Teams Open in Hobbs

By Don Eskins

Carlsbad High’s Cavemen and Cavegirl swim teams will kickoff the 2024-25 season on Saturday, November 9, in Hobbs, and they’ll be doing it under the direction of new head coach Samantha Segura.

Segura, who has served the past three years as CHS’s assistant coach, said her new job has taken some getting used to but she’s looking forward to piloting Carlsbad’s program.

“I’m feeling great about taking on this new role,” said Segura. “Going from assistant coach to head coach has definitely been a big transition for me, but I’m feeling confident, and the swimmers have been great and very receptive.

“I expect great things from these kids. I’m hoping that our swimmers who have been doing this for several years can continue to thrive and improve,” said the CHS coach. “We also have some new swimmers with a lot of growth within them. With hard work, I think we can have a very productive season.”

Senior Mason Dhenin has been selected as this year’s Cavemen captain. Along with Dhenin, the boys’ program will be returning six lettermen. They are Moses Mendoza, Samuel Vega, Constantine Gonzales, Kason Longbine, Benjamin Jang and Rex Reynolds.

Serving as this year’s Cavegirl captain will be junior Olivia Jang. She’ll be joined by returning lettermen Chloe Noel, Jade Burgess, Julia Comer, Ava Delafosse, Kimberly Quintana, Taitum Lindsey, and Sofia (Tiny) Martinez.

New swimmers for 2024-25 are Santiago Gallardo (10th grade), Jeannette Gonzalez (9th grade), Manuel Baldemar (8th grade), Brennan Reed (8th grade), Bennett Mitchell (8th grade) and Paisley Johnson (8th grade).

“I’m really proud of this team,” said Segura. “I can’t wait to see what they are going to do this upcoming season.”

The CHS swimmers opening meet in Hobbs on Saturday will get underway at the CORE. Events will begin at 10 a.m.
