The Carlsbad High School Cavemen and Cavegirl cross country teams will host the Ron Singleton Invitational on Saturday, October 26. The meet, which will take place at the Bob Forrest Youth Sports Complex, will get underway at 9 a.m.
The event, CHS’s only home appearance of the season, will serve as Carlsbad’s final tune-up for Friday’s, November 1, District 4/5A Tournament in Hobbs. Seven to eight teams are expected to compete at the meet.
“We’ve been on the road all season, so our kids are excited about having the opportunity to run at home, in front of their own family and friends this week,” said CHS cross country coach Michael Sims. “So, as their coach, I just want them to go out and enjoy this one. I’m not going to be so concerned about their time and placement, but I do want them to try a few new things on their run here. Basically, we’ll be using our meet to prepare for our district tournament.”
Carlsbad’s boys’ and girls’ teams competed in the Albuquerque Academy Extravaganza last Saturday, October 19. Competing in one of the state’s toughest meets, the Cavegirls placed 14th, the Cavemen 16th.
“I was beyond proud of the girls’ performance. It was the best showing our girls have had at Academy since it became such a prestigious New Mexico meet,” said Sims. “As always, Alyssa Balencia led our girls’ team while Kaitlyn Robertson and Ali Aguilar ran their best races of the season, and possibly, in their entire cross country career. Rainelle Ruiz and Jocelyn Baca also ran strong races, something they’ve been doing consistently all year.”
Cavegirl Academy team finishes: 1. Alyssa Balencia, 21:30; 2. Rainelle Ruiz, 22:52; 3. Alessandra Aguilar, 23:05; 4. Kaitlyn Robertson, 23:42; and 5. Jocelyn Baca, 24:22.
“As for our boys, although they didn’t turn in the kind of performance we were hoping to see, Dany Hernandez, Rex Reynolds, and Issac Williamson ran well for us at the front. However, despite coming up short of our goal at Academy, we expect to perform much better at our district meet,” said coach Sims. “On a side note, Academy served as the varsity debut for Blake Waldon and Urijah Yorgensen. It proved to be a great experience for them, and I was very happy with their results.”
Cavemen Academy team finishes: 1. Dany Hernandez, 17:42; 2. Rex Reynolds, 17:46; 3. Isaac Williamson, 18:24; 4. Kaleb Vasquez, 19:04; 5. Kleyvin Hernandez, 19:31; 6. Judah Wittmayer, 19:32; 7. Urijah Yorgensen, 21:13; 8. Jose Medrano, 21:25; and 9. Blake Walden, 21:34.
