It’s a meet the Cavemen and Cavegirl cross country teams have been eyeing all season long—the District 4/5A Tournament—and it gets underway on Friday, November 1, in Hobbs.
The meet, featuring teams from Carlsbad, Hobbs, Roswell, and Clovis, is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
“It is one of the meets, along with state, we’ve been preparing for all season,” said CHS head cross country coach Michael Sims. “The good news is that our kids are about as ready as they could be for district, but just as important as being prepared is that everybody’s healthy.”
The Cavegirls lineup will feature Alyssa Balencia, Rainelle Ruiz, Alessandra Aguilar, Kaitlyn Robertson, Jocelyn Baca, and Aubrey Veloz.
Running for the Cavemen will be Dany Hernandez, Rex Reynolds, Isaac Williamson, Kaleb Vasquez, Kleyvin Hernandez, Judah Wittmayer, Urijah Yorgensen, Jose Medrano, and Blake Walden.
The Hobbs Eagles, in the boys’ division, and Clovis, in the girls’, will enter the meet as tournament favorites. The top three teams in both divisions will advance to the state tournament scheduled for Saturday, November 9, in Albuquerque.
“Hobbs and Clovis look to be solid favorites, but as we all know, anything is possible in meets like this,” said Sims. “We’ll be doing our best to win, but we feel we have a great shot to finish no worse than second or third in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions.”
The Cavemen will be two-time defending District 4/5A champions at the meet. But in 2024, CHS’s faces are much different than they’ve been over the past two years.
“We lost several kids from last year’s team, so we’ve been pretty young this season. Actually, we have just three seniors in this year’s district lineup for both the boys and girls. On the boys’ side, only Issac Williamson is a senior; on the girls’ side, Kaitlyn Robertson and Aubrey Veloz,” said the CHS coach. “But we’re all excited about the opportunities we have this week at our district final. It should be fun.”
Last week, on Saturday, CHS hosted their only home meet of the season, the Ron Singleton Invitational. To date, scores, places, and times are unavailable.
Cavegirl VB Falls to Clovis 3-2
The Carlsbad High School Cavegirl volleyball team dropped a close 3-2 decision (25-15, 13-25, 16-25, 25-21, 17-15) to the District 4/5A second-place Clovis Wildcats in Carlsbad on Tuesday, October 29.
With the loss, the Cavegirls fell to 7-13 on the year and 0-4 in league play. Clovis, with the win, elevated their overall record to 10-10 and 3-1 in conference.
As of October 30, Carlsbad had two more games remaining on their 2024 schedule. On Thursday, October 31, they traveled to the Alien City to take on the state’s fourth-ranked Roswell Coyotes, 20-1 on the year and 4-0 in District 4/5A.
The Cavegirls are scheduled to close out 2024 play on Tuesday, November 5, in Carlsbad against the 10-10 (1-3) Hobbs Eagles. Game times are set for 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
