Carlsbad High went 3-0 at the recent Cavemen Baseball Classic. The event took place in Carlsbad at the Tom Forni Cavemen Corral on March 20-22. The string of victories upped CHS’s overall record to 8-4.

The Classic, a round-robin tournament, featured six teams divided into two pools. Pool A consisted of El Paso Da Vinci, Las Cruces High, and Carlsbad. Pool B contained El Paso Vista, Hobbs, and Las Cruces Centennial. Pool play took place on Thursday and Friday, March 20-21.

On Saturday, March 22, the two separate pools faced off against each other based on pool play records.

In mounting their 3-0 record, the Cavemen knocked off El Paso Da Vinci 12-2, Las Cruces High 7-0, and Centennial 8-7 in eight innings.

Although winning all three games, Cavemen head coach Mike McGaha said he felt his chargers still had a lot of work ahead of them.

“We played well against Las Cruces, but that certainly wasn’t the case with our victories over Da Vinci and Centennial,” said the coach. “Although we won, we played pretty bad.

“We had too many walks and too many errors. We made mistakes that we don’t normally make,” said McGaha. “But we’re working hard every day to correct them.”

On March 28-29, Friday and Saturday, the Cavemen, ranked sixth in Class 5A by MaxPreps, will compete in the Rio Rancho Invitational.

The tournament’s first pitch went out on Thursday, March 27. According to MaxPreps, CHS was scheduled to take on the 6-8 St. Pius Spartans. It will be their last regular season tournament of the season.
