Cavemen Run 3rd, Cavegirls 5th at Artesia

By Don Eskins

The Carlsbad Cavemen and Cavegirl cross country teams competed well at the October 4 Artesia Invitational. The Cavemen, amassing 81 points, finished third, while the Cavegirls, with 112, placed fifth.

In the boys’ division, Hobbs, with a score of 44, placed first, and Clovis, with 80, placed second. In the girls’ competition, Clovis captured first place with 49 points, while Hereford, with 50, finished second. Placing third, with 70 points, were the Hobbs Eagles.

Dany Hernandez crossed the finish line first for the Cavemen. The CHS harrier, traveling the distance in 16:29, placed sixth. Carlsbad freshman Rex Reynolds, right behind Hernandez, finished seventh with a time of 16:34.

“The boys lost to Clovis by just one point, which shows just how much they’ve improved over the past several weeks,” said CHS cross country coach Mike Sims. “If they keep working as hard as they have for the past few weeks, they’ll continue to grow. Come district time, they should be very competitive.

“Both Dany and Rex have made huge strides in their progress. Although we’re still waiting on official updates for rankings, it appears that Rex’s efforts have put him among the top freshmen in the entire state,” added the CHS coach. “I was also pleased with the effort we got from Jose Medrano. In only his second start on our varsity squad, he finished third.”

Out in front for the Cavegirls was Alyssa Balencia. Balencia, having recorded a 20:47, placed 10th. Aubrey Veloz, the second CHS harrier to cross the tape, finished 20th with a time of 21:42.

“Balencia and Veloz led the girls really well in Artesia. We were also happy with the effort we got from Jocelyn Baca. In her varsity debut, she improved her time by nearly two minutes,” said Sims. “On the JV level, we got a great effort from Jaydance Gutierrez. Overall, I’d have to say these girls look to be the strongest group we’ve had in quite some time.”

In JV boys’ competition, the Cavemen, with 110 points, placed third. Bryan King, with a time of 18:46, placed seventh to lead all CHS runners.

On Saturday, October 12, CHS will compete at the Hobbs Invitational. Competition will get underway at 9 a.m.
