CHS Swim Team Report
The Carlsbad High School swim team was back in action after a two-week hiatus for the Thanksgiving holiday. On Saturday, December 7, CHS was one of 12 teams from southern New Mexico and west Texas competing in the 2024 Bob Reid Invitational at the CORE in Hobbs.
The Cavemen had their full roster, with all 10 swimmers participating. The boys’ team placed third overall with 258 points. However, the Cavegirls were missing over half of their swimmers due to illness, injury, or other obligations. With only five swimmers competing, they placed fifth overall with 177 points.
Cavegirl sophomore Ava Delafosse was Carlsbad’s newest team member to qualify for the state championships. Delafosse qualified in the Girls’ 100 Yard Butterfly, earning a bronze medal with a time of 1:05.46. She also earned a silver medal for her performance in the 100 Yard Backstroke.
Mason Dhenin requalified for state and improved his time in the Boys’ 500 Yard Freestyle, earning a gold medal with a time of 5:20.80. The Boys’ 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, which included Benjamin Jang, Kason Longbine, Constantine Gonzales, and Mason Dhenin, also requalified for state, earning silver medals with a finishing time of 1:42.56.
Picking up bronze medals for the Cavegirls were Tiny Martinez in the 200 Yard IM and Tiny Martinez, Julia Comer, Brennan Reed, and Taitum Lindsey in the Girls’ 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.
Silver medalists for the Cavemen were Boys’ 200 Yard Medley Relay, Moses Mendoza, Benjamin Jang, Mason Dhenin, and Kason Longbine; Boys’ 200 Freestyle Relay, Benjamin Jang, Kason Longbine, Constantine Gonzales, and Mason Dhenin; 100 Yard Backstroke, Samuel Vega; and 100 Yard Breaststroke, Benjamin Jang.
The Carlsbad High School swim team would like to invite everyone to their Holiday Invitational Swim Meet on Saturday, December 14, at the CHS Natatorium. The competition will begin at 10 a.m.
