Carlsbad High clubbed the Cibola Cougars 35-6 in the Cavern City on Friday night, September 13. The win pushed CHS’s seasonal record up to 2-2; Cibola fell to 1-3.
In a dominating performance, the Cavemen accumulated 350 total yards of offense against the Cougars while limiting them to just 150.
Up 7-0 following a first-quarter Blas Lopez III interception and 18-yard return for a touchdown, sophomore running back Brock Wright, on his way to a 145-yard rushing night, broke loose for a 74-yard touchdown run in the second period, and the rout was on.
Quarterback Kason Perez went on to connect with Ty Young from two yards out, Brock Wright from 10, and ran in another himself en route to the 35-6 win.
“Our defense was phenomenal; they played lights-out. Offensively, although we did score 35 points, we sputtered a little bit. Cibola was giving us a lot of looks, and it took us a while to figure out what they were doing,” said Caveman head coach Cale Sanders. “But, on homecoming night, we did get the win. Our coaches were very proud of the way our kids battled.”
Defensively, CHS was led by Colton McKibben’s seven solo tackles—three of them tackles for losses—and an interception. Also having big games were Simon Rubio with nine total tackles, one TFL, and a sack; Diego Ramirez with nine total tackles, one TFL, and a sack; Bubba Anderson with eight total tackles, two TFLs, and a sack; and Blas Lopez III with two assists, an interception, and return for touchdown.
