Cavemen Close Out Event at 2-1Cavegirls Go 3-0 at Portales Shootout

By Don Eskins

Abbey Dugan pumped in 18 points and Jasmynn Gonzales 10 to lead the Cavegirls past the Portales Ramettes 37-34 at this year’s Portales Shootout.

Overall Carlsbad’s girls went 3-0 at the event, tops in the field. However, as it was a Shootout, no champion was declared.

En route to their round-robin final, CHS downed Silver City 40-30 and Gallup’s Miyamura 64-35. The Shootout took place in Portales Thursday through Saturday, January 2-4.

“Our girls were a little bit tired when they took the floor against Portales. Three games in three days is a lot,” said Cavegirls head coach Matt Enloe. “But they managed to make enough plays down the stretch to get the win.”

“Portales always has a good team. They usually have some great athletes, and they’re well coached, which has always made playing them one of my favorite games,” said Enloe. “But we got a win, and anytime you can beat Portales, it’s a good win.”

Although leading 10-8 after first-quarter play, 16-14 at the half, and 27-25 at the end of the third, with 3:50 remaining in the fourth, the Cavegirls found themselves trailing Portales 34-30.

But a Faith Kluesner shot from underneath the basket—with the clock showing 2:34—cut the Ramettes’ lead to 34-32.

With time running out and only 1:40 left to play, Cavegirl senior guard Maci Garcia dropped in a three-pointer to put CHS out in front 35-34. An Abbey Dugan layout, with just 30 seconds on the clock, put the finishing touches on a hard-fought 37-34 CHS victory.

On the afternoon, Carlsbad hit 46.9% of their field goal attempts, 15-of-32. Inside the arc, they made good on 10-of-19 shots for 52.6%, and from outside the arc, 5-of-13, for 38.5%. From the charity line, they were a perfect 2-for-2.

Along with Dugan’s 18 points and Gonzales’ 10, also dropping in counters for CHS were Maci Garcia, five; Becca Brown, two; and Faith Kluesner, two.

The win upped the Cavegirls record to 11-2 on the year. This week, MaxPreps has them ranked 13th among Class 5A teams.

Results of the Cavegirls’ 40-30 win over Silver City and 64-35 victory over Miyamura are included in today’s Shootout recaps.

Cavemen 2nd at Portales Tourney

Although dominating the Portales Rams 68-37 and upending the Pojoaque Valley Elks 49-39, a tough 50-46 loss to the Santa Fe Demons left the Carlsbad Cavemen holding a 2-1 record for their three day’s work at the Portales Shootout.

Despite the close loss to Santa Fe, Cavemen head coach John Zumbrun said his kids benefited a great deal from their experience at the Shootout.

“The competition in Portales was really good. Due to their tough schedule this year, Santa Fe brought a really good team to the Shootout. Pojoaque could play ball, too; they entered our game at 8-2,” said Zumbrun. “The Shootout allowed us to get three very good games under our belts just before school started up again. So, for us, it was very beneficial.”

On Saturday, January 4, Carlsbad used a gutsy fourth-quarter performance to down the Pojoaque Valley Elks 49-39.

Neither team could build a big lead during the first three quarters of action, and as the buzzer sounded, ending third-period play, CHS found themselves trailing the Elks 37-36.

But the final eight minutes of play belonged to the Cavemen. During that time, CHS outscored Pojoaque 13-2 to grab the 49-39 win.

Nine Cavemen scored en route to their victory over the Elks. Putting points up on the scoreboard were Maliq Mills, eight; Zenas Huerta, seven; Shane Sullivan, seven; Jacob Chavarria, six; Tanner Cornum, five; Kyran Orgain, five; Dryden Preece, five; and Brandon Sullivan and Mario De Leon, three.

CHS hit 10-of-21 twos, for 48%, and 6-of-22 threes, for 27%, in their win over Pojoaque. Overall, they made good on 16-of-43 shots for 37%. From the free throw line, they were 11-of-20 for 55%.

On the year, the Cavemen are 8-3. Currently, MaxPreps has ranked them 12th in Class 5A prep basketball play.

Results of the Cavemen’s 68-37 victory over Portales and 50-46 loss to Santa Fe are included in today’s Shootout recaps.
