CHS Cross Country Off to Good Start in 2024
By Don Eskins
The CHS cross country teams, young and revamped, returned from the Centennial Cross Country Invitational with mixed reviews from new head coach Michael Sims.
The Cavemen finished fourth in a field of eight, while the Cavegirls placed third in a field of five. The meet took place in Las Cruces on Saturday, August 31.
“Our results weren’t the results we were hoping for, but for their first meet of the year, I did see some encouraging efforts from our kids,” said Sims. “Rex Reynolds placed 12th to pace our boys. In supporting roles, Dany Hernandez, 22nd, Issac Willamson, 25th, and Kaleb Vasquez, 27th, weren’t too far off his pace.
“Alyssa Balencia, who placed third, led the Cavegirl effort,” he said. “Aubrey Veloz 16th, Kaitlyn Robertson 19th, and Ali Aguilar 20th ran well and finished close together for us.”
In the boys’ division, 60 runners comprised the field. In the girls’ division, 47 runners competed.
“Overall, we have a strong front group for both the boys’ and girls’ teams. We just need to work on getting our fifth, sixth, and seventh runners, on both teams, stronger if we’re going to be competitive in district,” said the CHS coach. “All of our kids are capable of improving their times, so I think we’re in pretty good shape at this time of the season.”
The Cavemen and Cavegirls will next compete in Cloudcroft on Friday, September 6.
