Cavemen, Cavegirls Sweep Pecos Valley Invitational

By Don Eskins

Carlsbad High’s harriers, en route to championship titles, swept both the boys and girls divisions at the Pecos Valley Invitational in Roswell on Saturday, September 28.

.”Our kids executed a smart race, and I’m one happy coach. But besides picking up two wins, I think we learned a lot as well,” said CHS cross country coach Michael Sims. “Both teams beat Roswell—one of our district opponents—which was especially good for us. Getting a victory over a district rival is always a good thing.”

Alyssa Balencia placed first in the girls’ varsity division with a time of 22:11 to lead the Cavegirls. CHS scored 37 points—13 points better than runner-up Hagerman, who tallied 50—to claim this year’s Pecos Valley Invitational championship.

Three other Cavegirls placed among the tournament’s top 10. Aubrey Veloz, with a 22:51, placed second; Rainelle Ruiz, with a 24:01, placed fifth; and Alessandra Aguilar, with a 24:30, placed eighth.

Rounding out the Cavegirl scorecard were Jaydance Guttierez, 21st, with a 26:54, and Rachael McMillan, 24th, with a 28:23.

In the boys’ division, the Cavemen outdistanced Roswell High by 26 points, 39-65, to claim this year’s Pecos Valley title.

Pacing the Cavemen was Rex Reynolds. Having covered the distance in 17:51, Reynolds placed third.

Other Cavemen recording top 10 finishes were Dany Hernandez, fifth, with a time of 18:22, and Kaleb Vasquez, eighth, with a time of 19:02.

Also contributing to the Carlsbad victory were Isaac Williamson, 12th, with a time of 19:35, and Judah Wittmayer, 14th, with a time of 19:38.

In JV action, the Cavemen crushed the field, outpointing the runner-up NMMI Broncos 19-80. Jose Medrano led CHS with a first-place finish. He traveled the distance in 19:48.

The CHS harriers will next compete at the Artesia Invitational on Friday, October 4. Competition is scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.

“Artesia has a very fast course. There will be a lot of teams from our area there, including all the teams in our district,” said Sims. “All of our kids are excited about competing in Artesia. As a team, we hope to go big there.”
