The Cavegirl basketball team will be in Hobbs, America, on Friday night, February 21, to trade buckets with the top-ranked Lady Eagles.

The game will mark the end of 2024-25 district play for both squads. Entering the clash, the Eagles are 24-1 on the year and a perfect 5-0 in conference play. The Cavegirls, ranked 12th this week by MaxPreps, are 17-8, 2-3.

But you can bet Hobbs won’t be looking past the Cavegirls. On February 7 in Carlsbad, CHS almost pinned the Eagles with their second loss of the season.

Carlsbad led the top-ranked Lady Birds 28-25 as they headed into the final eight minutes of play. However, during that eight-minute span, the wheels come off of what had been a great defensive effort. Although losing 44-34, CHS held Hobbs to their lowest offensive output of the season.

“Hobbs has a great team; that’s no secret. Playing them in Hobbs in the Ralph Tasker Arena will be tough and offer a whole new bag of challenges for our girls,” said Cavegirl head coach Matt Enloe. “But we feel like we can play with them. If we can tighten up our defense some and get a few more balls to fall in the bucket for us we’ll be alright.”

Tipoff for the varsity game is set for 7 p.m. The JVs will take the floor first at 5:30 p.m.

Hot Cavegirls Toast Roswell 58-34

Playing great defense has always been the pillar on which Cavegirl head coach Matt Enloe’s basketball program is built.

“If we can get a great defensive effort from our girls and hit a few more shots,” said the Cavegirl coach, “our girls can play with anybody and win.”

On Friday night, February 14, in the Alien City against the Roswell Coyotes, the CHS coach’s philosophy once again paid off for his charges.

While limiting Roswell to just 34 points, Enloe’s girls—behind the hot hand of Abbey Dugan, who scored 27 points, and Jasmynn Gonzales’ 11—Carlsbad lit up the scoreboard for 24 first-half points and 34 second, en route to a 58-34 victory.

The win upped CHS’s record to 17-8 on the season and 2-3 in conference.
