The Carlsbad High School Cavegirl basketball team opened up the 2024-25 season with a tough-fought 36-34 loss to the Eastlake Falcons in El Paso on Saturday, November 23.
Down 19-12 at the half, the Cavegirls rallied to outscore the Falcons 22-17 over the final two periods of play. But they couldn’t quite overcome their first half seven-point deficit and fell to Lakeside.
Seniors Abbie Dugan, with 13 points, Jasmynn Gonzales, with 11, and Rebecca Brown, with eight, led the Cavegirl offensive effort.
Dugan also had a big game under the boards. The Cavegirl guard pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with seven steals and one assist.
Despite opening the new cage season with a narrow loss, Cavegirl head coach Matt Enloe said he felt good about his charges’ effort.
While the matchup with Eastlake was CHS’s season inaugural, the Falcons entered the game at 7-1.
“Taking on a team in our season opener that had already played eight games was really a tough challenge for our kids. But after falling behind 19-12 at the half to a well-groom Eastlake, our kids battled back to take the lead with three minutes left,” said Enloe. “We just weren’t able to hold onto the lead the rest of the way. But our kids battled them hard, and our staff was very proud of their effort.”
The Cavegirls were scheduled to take on the Chaparral Lobos on the road on Tuesday night, November 26. They’ll play at home for the first time this season on Monday, December 2, against the Alamogordo Tigers.
