Carlsbad High’s Cavegirl softball team toppled the Lovington Wildcats 3-1 in the Cavern City on Tuesday night, March 25. It was the first home game of the season for the Cavegirls.
CHS jumped out in front of the Wildcats 2-0 in the bottom half of the opening frame of play. Leading 2-1 as they came up to bat in the bottom half of the sixth, the Cavegirls added an insurance run en route to their 3-1 win.
Carlsbad picked up five hits in the game, with three of those hits going for extra bases. Collecting doubles were Makayla Chester, Aubrey Hernandez, and Allyson Madrid. Faith Rivera, 1-3 on the night, recorded two RBIs.
Picking up the win was senior Kalion Fuentes. In the circle for all seven innings, she gave up just one run on four hits and walked two while striking out 13.
The victory over the Wildcats lifted CHS’s record to 3-4. With the loss, the Wildcats fell to 5-4.
The Cavegirls, ranked 16th in Class 5A by MaxPreps, will compete in the Rio Rancho Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 28-29. The tournament’s opening-round game took place on Thursday, March 27.
Tough Go in Las Cruces
On Friday, March 21, CHS traveled to Las Cruces for a doubleheader with the Class 5A top-ranked Centennial High School Lady Hawks (8-0). The Cavegirls dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker in the opener. In the nightcap, they fell to the Hawks 15-6.
