Cavegirls 5th, Cavemen 6th at Pecos Swim Meet

By CHS Swim Team

The Cavegirls swim team earned 96 points to place fifth out of 11 teams at the Pecos Invitational, while the Cavemen, after collecting 112 points, placed sixth out of 10. The meet took place on Saturday, November 16.

Just 14 CHS athletes competed at Pecos. Due to different eligibility rules in Texas, Carlsbad’s eighth graders were ineligible to compete. Although unable to swim, they still attended the meet in support of their teams. Several other Cavemen and Cavegirl athletes were also unable to compete because of illness or injury,

For the meet, head coach Samantha Segura pulled her own version of a hat trick by having her swimmers choose their individual events. They did so by drawing them out of a hat.

Swimmers can get comfortable swimming their signature events or distances. This can lead to stagnation or a lack of confidence in unfamiliar events.

“I wanted to exercise a fun way for our swimmers to push themselves, to swim events or distances they normally would not choose,” said Segura. “The goal was to prove to each swimmer that they could swim a variety of events. Hopefully, they enjoyed the challenge and maybe even uncovered a hidden talent!”

Senior Mason Dhenin was the only swimmer to qualify for the state championships in an individual event in Pecos. Dhenin earned his third state qualifying time of the season in the 200 Yard IM (Individual Medley), finishing in third place with a time of 2:14.62.

The Boys 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, featuring Freshman Benjamin Jang, Junior Samuel Vega, Sophomore Kason Longbine, and Mason Dhenin, also made the cut for the state championship, finishing in fifth place with a time of 3:45.07.

The CHS Swim teams will be idle for the next two weeks. On Saturday, December 7, they’ll travel to Hobbs to compete in the Bob Reid Invitational.
