Improved Cavemen and Cavegirl wrestling teams made quite a showing at the Ruidoso Invitational on Saturday, January 11.
At the meet, the Cavegirls placed second in a field of 11, while the Cavemen finished third in a field of 12.
“This tournament wasn’t nearly as big as the ones our kids have been competing in for most of the season. But it was a good one, filled with some great competition, and our kids wrestled very well,” said CHS head coach Mark Pratt. “Our girls were just five points shy of winning it all, and our boys were just 8 1/2 points away from finishing second.”
En route to placing second, the CHS girls hauled in two firsts, two seconds, and three thirds.
Picking up gold medals for first-place finishes were Cavegirls Emily Fuentes (114 lbs.) and Mya Cornejo (132 lbs.). Both girls posted unblemished 3-0 records at the meet.
Logging medals for second place efforts were, at 100, Andrea Ramirez, 2-1, and, at 126, Ellianna Campos, 2-1.
Grabbing bronze medals for third place finishes were, at 165, Jacklin Powell, 3-1, at 18,5 Arianna Campos, 1-2, and, at 235, Aaliyah Martin, 3-1.
Five Cavemen medaled at the meet. Placing first for the Carlsbad boys were Aiden Rodriguez at 114, Justin Owens at 145, and Francisco Calderon at 152. All three grapplers were perfect at 3-0.
Collecting bronze medals were, at 121, Mythias Meier, 3-1 (third) and, at 133, Guess Box, 3-2 (fourth).
Next up for the Cavemen and Cavegirls will be another big one. On Friday and Saturday, January 17-18, they’ll compete at the Joe Vivian Invitational in Albuquerque.
CHS Sweeps Artesia
In a dual-meet competition on Thursday, January 7, the Cavemen downed the Artesia Bulldogs 39-30, while the Cavegirls caged the Lady Dogs 48-15.
Registering falls for the Cavemen were Sabas Hernandez at 127, Guess Box at 133, and Francisco Calderon at 152. (Times and scores posted in today’s recaps.)
