Cavegirl Volleyball Set for District Opener

By Don Eskins

The District 4/5A season has arrived for the Carlsbad High School volleyball team.

On Tuesday, October 15, the Cavegirls will square off against the Clovis Wildcats in Clovis to kick off 2024 conference play. The JVs will compete first at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6 p.m.

Earlier this season, on September 7, CHS lost to the Cats in three sets: 25-10, 25-20, and 25-19. But this isn’t September the 7, and the Cavegirls are a much better team.

The Cavegirls, playing with confidence, have continued to improve with each game this season, the kind of confidence that just could make them legitimate contenders for this year’s district championship.

En route to district play, Carlsbad has exhibited a lot of resilience. Following a 0-3 start under new head coach Taylor Hardison, CHS has played even for most of the season. As of October 9, they were 7-9 on the year and had won four of their last eight games.

Presently, the Roswell Coyotes are the odds-on-favorite to win this year’s conference title. The Coyotes, 14-1 on the year, are ranked sixth among Class 5A teams.

On Thursday, October 17, CHS will host the Coyotes. The JVs will play at 5 p.m., the varsity at 6 p.m.

The Cavegirls, in their final pre-season tune-up, lost a tight 3-2 match to the Goddard Rockets on Tuesday, October 8. After dropping the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-19, the Cavegirls rallied to win the third and fourth, 26-24 and 27-25. In a close fifth set, Goddard edged Carlsbad 16-14.
