The 2025 prep softball season will get underway for the Carlsbad High School Cavegirls on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15, at the Las Cruces Invitational.
At the City of Crosses tournament, Carlsbad will take the field for four games. They’ll open up with pool play against the Silver City Colts on Friday at 1 p.m. and then follow that up by battling the Belen Eagles at 3:30 p.m.
After Friday’s pool play, they’ll be bracketed by record for further competition on Saturday.
Although having had a slower start date than most of the teams competing in this year’s Las Cruces tournament, head coach Brian Santo said his kids are ready and fired up to play.
“Both Silver City and Belen have already opened the season. Silver is 4-0 and Belen 2-4, so we expect them to play us tough,” said Santo. “But our girls have been working hard for some time now. They’ve got a great attitude about getting the new season underway, and they’re ready to play.”
Cavegirl softballers Kalion Fuentes, Parris Weldon, Faith Rivera, Aubrey Hernandez, and Vianka Villa, all 2024 All-Staters, will lead the way for CHS in 2025.
Last year, as a pitcher with an ERA of just 2.05, Fuentes posted a 7-7 record with 136 Ks. At the plate, she hit .500 with 45 RBIs and 11 home runs.
Parris Weldon, CHS’s second sacker, hit .462, with 23 RBIs and five home runs. Third baseman Aubrey Hernandez logged a .323 batting average with 13 RBIs. CHS center fielder Vianka Villa registered a .400 batting average with six RBIs and one home run, while catcher Faith Rivera hit .432 with 21 RBIs and one round-tripper.
Also expected to play leading roles for the Cavegirls will be returning All-District players Allyson Madrid and Katrina Ortega.
During 2024, Madrid collected a .390 batting average and recorded 18 RBIs and two home runs. Ortega, inside the circle, was 4-1 on the year with an ERA of 4.58. With a bat, she hit .265.
