Former Beatle John Lennon once wrote a song he titled “Starting Over.” Wow, what a great thing to be able to do if you want to.
Following a 12-8 season in 2023—and missing the state playoffs for the second year in a row—the Cavegirl soccer team wanted to.
However, starting over in Lovington on Tuesday, August 20, wasn’t exactly the kind of start they had envisioned for 2024.
“In the first two minutes of the game, they had us down 2-0,” said Cavegirl head coach Misty Long. “The Cats were on a roll, and they had us on our heels.
“But we called a timeout, settled our kids down, and they went back out onto the field to play Cavegirl soccer,” she said. “From that point on, we were in control of the game.”
Led by two-time All-State senior Abbey Dugan, the Cavegirls put up four quick goals to grab a 4-2 lead at the half. During second-half play, they added two more for good measure en route to securing the 6-2 victory.
Dugan scored four goals in the Cavegirl win. Also contributing were Hayden Brose and Emma Allen. Brose distributed the ball well to register four assists and, along with Allen, scored one goal.
“This was a big win for all of our girls. Every one of them played hard. After getting off to such a rough start, these girls battled back to get the win,” she said. “We saw some good things from a lot of players today, and as a staff, we couldn’t be happier.”
Next up for the Cavegirls will be the Las Cruces Invitational on Friday and Saturday, August 30-31. CHS will face off against Santa Teresa in their tournament opener on Friday at 2 p.m. (MaxPreps Schedule)
