It wasn’t the greatest of days for the CHS track teams to be competing. But, on Friday, April 4, in Hobbs, the Cavemen and Cavegirls put up some impressive numbers despite the weather.

“The weather in Hobbs was awful. But, despite the conditions, our kids performed very well,” said CHS head track coach Charles Millar. “We were able to post some season best times in the relays.”

Caveman Bobby Castaneda placed first in the 200 dash. The CHS sprinter covered the distance in 23.87.

“We were really proud of the effort Bobby put out,” said Millar. “He continues his dominance in the 200 and looked stronger than he has all season.”

Bryan King also had a big day in Hobbs. King clocked an 18.04 in the 110 Hurdles to place second.

In the girls’ competition, the CHS 1600 Sprint Medley made a lot of noise. The team, comprised of 1) Nicki Abeyta, 2) Chloe Lopez, 3) Aubrey Veloz, and 4) Abbey Dugan, turned in 4:50.35 to place second.

“These girls looked really good,” said Millar. “They have the potential to be much better. We expect to see some big things from them as the season progresses.”

On Monday, April 7, CHS hosted the Eddy County Qualifier.

“We saw a lot of good things from all of our kids at the Qualifier. However, we were especially happy about Josh Moyers’ effort,” said the CHS coach. “He posted a 6’2” mark in the high jump and qualified for state.”
