Brown Leads Cavegirls Past Roswell, 43-32

Trailing 18-15 at the half, Carlsbad High, behind the 16-point effort of 5’11” senior center Becca Brown, rallied to tame the Roswell Coyotes 43-32. The District 4/5A battle took place in the Alien City on Friday night, January 31.

Nine of Brown’s points came in the third period, a period that saw the Cavegirls light up the scoreboard for 17 points while holding the Otes to just four.

CHS’s flurry of third-quarter points put them out in front of Roswell 32-22 at the end of the period. Trading buckets with Roswell in the fourth frame, 11-10, Carlsbad held on to register the 43-32 win.

Also having a big night with the ball was senior center Jasmynn Gonzales. Gonzales contributed 10 points to the Carlsbad victory. Just off the double-digit mark was Abby Dugan, who dropped in nine.

Carlsbad, having downed the Coyotes, picked up their first conference win of the season. They’re 1-1 in district play, on the year 16-6.

Cavegirls vs. Soaring Eagles

The Hobbs Eagles, New Mexico’s top-ranked girls’ basketball team, will set up camp in Carlsbad on Friday night, February 7, to take on the Carlsbad High School Cavegirls.

While the Cavegirls (16-6, 1-1) have lost to the seventh-ranked Clovis Wildcats, 35-34, and downed the 14th-ranked Roswell Coyotes, 43-32, in District 4/5A play, the Eagles (19-3, 2-0) have routed Roswell 60-19 and Clovis 85-39.

The Eagles have averaged 70 points per game while giving up just 30. The Cavegirls have averaged 45 points per outing while surrendering 34.

Varsity action is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. The JVs will open up the night’s play at 5:30 p.m.
