The Cavemen will enter Friday night’s matchup, October 25, with the Las Cruces Bulldawgs as heavy underdogs. But, like Tom Petty once sang in a hit song of his, they won’t be backing down.
Besides, the history books are full of stories about underdogs who, with true grit, engineered monumental upsets. Fans who cheered and backed Goliath were among the first to learn about that.
Despite the challenge, the Cavemen are ready! And with a week off to heal up and prepare for Las Cruces, no doubt about it, it’s going to be a red-flag weekend of football for Bulldawgs fans in southwestern New Mexico.
As for the Cavemen, in only their second year of head coach Cale Sanders’ program, they’ve grown by leaps and bounds. They’ve already won twice as many games as they did in 2023, and they’re still very much in the mix for a spot in this year’s New Mexico state playoffs.
Although nobody knows for certain just which teams will be invited to this year’s Big Dance, wins over the Las Cruces Bulldawgs and the Hobbs Eagles in their final two games of the season would greatly enhance CHS’s opportunity to grab one of the playoff seats.
With a split, the door should still remain open, but the odds of getting in will be somewhat diminished.
Having said that, the Cavemen know what they have to do over the next two weeks, starting with the Las Cruces Bulldawgs on Friday night. Getting to 4-4 on the season and 2-2 in District 3/6A has taken a complete team effort. Earning a trip to the state playoffs will do the same.
Here are some of the players who will take the field for their final two regular-season games as statistical leaders.
