Old timers in and around Carlsbad can probably remember former Texas A&M Aggie head football coach Jackie Sherrill.
Sherrill, who made a living at winning football games at A&M, credited the fans with much of the success his chargers experienced.
Always a sell-out for football games in College Station, Aggie fans are better known as the 12th man, especially the Aggie student body, who stand up in support throughout the entire game.
The Texas A&M coach said their support often tipped the scales in favor of the Aggies to help them win some of the biggest games in the school’s history. Even today, you can see the phrase, the 12th Man, etched across the A&M stadium.
The Cavemen, battling for a spot in this year’s state football playoffs, could use the support of their own 12th man—a packed Ralph Bowyer Cavemen Football Stadium filled with very vocal Carlsbad fans—on Friday, November 1.
Having just dropped a 30-12 game to the fifth-ranked Las Cruces Bulldawgs, the Cavemen, who are now 4-5 on the year, 2-3 in District 3/6A and ranked 14th, will need to knock off the 10th-ranked Hobbs Eagles, 5-4 (3-2), on Friday night in their final game of the season if they’re to have a legitimate shot at getting into this year’s state playoffs.
Although the Eagles will be favored in the matchup, playing in Carlsbad could even out the scales. Having said that, could Carlsbad’s 12th man tip those scales in favor of CHS? It did for the Aggies, and no doubt, it could help to do the same for the Cavemen.
Okay, Carlsbad, let’s get out to the Ralph Bowyer Cavemen Football Stadium, fill up those stands, and make some noise in support of our kids who’ll be vying for their New Mexico Class 6A playoff lives. Go, Cavemen!
NMAA Playoff Selections Going Out
The NMAA Selection Committee will release its choices for this year’s Class 6A State Football Tournament on Sunday, November 3. Twelve teams will get bids to the tournament.
Three teams, district champions, will receive automatic berths in the New Mexico Big Dance. Several areas of criteria will be used to determine just who gets the other nine spots.
The top four tournament seeds will draw first-round byes, while five through 12 will see first-round action, with the fifth through eighth seeds serving as playoff hosts. As a rule, the state’s top 10 teams will get in, while teams ranked 11th and 12th will be sitting on the bubble.
Some areas of criteria for playoff selections are records, rankings, and district finishes. Good Luck, Cavemen! (Records as of Thursday, October 24)
